Unattended Child
Children ages eight (8) or younger may not use the Library without a parent, guardian, caregiver present.
Responsibility for the safety and behavior of children in the Library rests with the child's parent/guardian or caregiver.
A caregiver must be at least 12 years old; attentive to the child's behavior, health, and safety needs; and able to assert reasonable influence over them.
If staff determine that a child is unattended, they will make a reasonable effort to locate the child's parent/guardian or caregiver in the building.
If the caregiver is not located within fifteen minutes, staff will call the police to take custody over the child.
Stranded Child at Closing Time
Before closing, library staff will ask anyone appearing to be under age 12 and without transportation to call a parent or guardian to pick them up.
If the child is not picked-up within 15 minutes of the library closing, staff will call the police to take custody of the child. Two staff members will wait with the child and within view of the library’s camera system until either the parent(s)/guardian(s) or the police arrive. If the parent(s)/guardian(s) arrive before the police, staff should notify the police that they are no longer needed.
Staff members may not drive minors home under any circumstances.
